On the first anniversary of the night Nora left, Archer arrived at the mansion for a scheduled exchange.

He remained at the gate, as required, while Nora carried Lily toward him.

The house glowed behind her in the early evening light.

The silver magnet was still on the refrigerator inside, but a new photograph now rested beneath it: Nora holding Lily beneath a flowering magnolia tree.

Archer handed Nora the leather baby journal she had accidentally left in a hospital bag months earlier.

“I didn’t read it,” he said.

Archer drove away with their daughter for the afternoon, moving slowly down the long driveway.

Nora remained at the gate until the car disappeared.
