whether supervised contact might someday be possible.

I placed it in the same folder that held the court order.

I did not answer immediately.

Safety, I had learned, was not cruelty.

A boundary was not revenge simply because someone hated being on the other side of it.

One evening, nearly a year after the barbecue, Lily and I were invited to a small cookout at a friend’s house.

I almost declined.

The smell of charcoal still brought me back to my parents’ yard.

But Lily wanted to go.

She spent most of the evening chasing bubbles with two other children.

At one point, she disappeared around the side of the house.

My heart stopped.

I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the patio.

Then Lily came running back, holding a red rubber ball.

“Mama, catch!”

I caught it against my chest.

She laughed.

A normal sound.

A child’s sound.

Nothing hidden beneath it.

Nothing dangerous waiting behind a shed.

I threw the ball back.

For years, my family had taught me that keeping the peace meant absorbing whatever they did and smiling afterward.

Lily taught me something else.

Peace was not silence.

Peace was watching my daughter run across a yard without wondering who might hurt her and who might stand by while it happened.

That was the family I chose to protect.

And this time, when she ran out of sight, I knew she would come running safely back.
