STORY PART 6 — They Called Baker an Assistant—Then Frank Opened Her Folder

4.9Editorial score

Special Counsel Cole instructed the investigators to escort Hale to a separate office for a formal interview.

Hale stood, adjusting his jacket as though appearance could still save him.

At the door, he stopped beside Baker.

“This city will forget you,” he said softly.

Baker looked at the folder in her hands.

“It remembered the evidence.

That was enough.”

Marquez escorted him away.

When the door closed, the room remained silent for several seconds.

The silence no longer carried fear.

It carried the weight of everyone realizing how close they had come to helping an innocent man be destroyed.

Frank looked at the commanders.

“Detective Ortega’s shield is to be returned immediately.

The department will release the complete video with the child’s identity protected.

Internal Affairs will document that the original allegation resulted from manipulated evidence.”

He turned to Levin.

“The prepared statement from City Hall will not be used.”

Levin gathered the pages Hale had brought.

“Understood.”

“And counsel?”

“Yes, Commissioner?”

“The next time someone in this office insults a member of my staff because he believes she lacks a grand title, you do not study the table.”

Levin’s face reddened.

“No, Commissioner.”

After the others left, Baker began collecting the remaining documents.

It was an ordinary gesture, the kind Hale had mistaken for proof that her work was ordinary.

Frank watched her for a moment.

“You knew he would overplay his hand.”

“I suspected he would.”

“You let him insult you.”

“Correcting him too early might have made him cautious.”

“You also let him put his shoe on an Internal Affairs document.”

Baker glanced at the faint mark on the page.

“That helped establish his state of mind.”

Frank almost smiled.

“Convenient.”

She closed the folder.

“Very.”

He became serious again.

“How long had you been working with the inspector general?”

“Since 5:30 this morning.

I noticed the transfer authorization while reviewing the evidence trail.

The deputy mayor’s signature could have been explained as routine, but the retired technician’s code could not.”

“And the call?”

“Special Counsel Cole wanted to hear whether Hale knew details that had not been disclosed.”

Frank nodded.

“He gave her more than she expected.”

“He believed everyone in the room was afraid of him.”

“Most were.”

Baker looked toward the closed door.

“Fear makes people quiet.

It does not always make them loyal.”

By afternoon, Detective Ortega had his shield back.

The department released the complete recording and announced that altered evidence had been circulated without police authorization.

The city inspector general confirmed an active investigation but withheld names until formal charges or administrative findings could be completed.
