Alexander did not take his eyes off Javier as I opened the apartment door.

Two Dallas detectives stood in the hallway, one on either side of my new son-in-law.

Javier had changed out of his tuxedo.

He wore a gray sweater, pressed trousers, and the expression of a man arriving to correct an inconvenient misunderstanding.

The female detective introduced herself as Detective Lena Ortiz.

Her partner, Detective Harris, kept one hand near his belt while he studied the blood on Sofia’s dress.

Javier looked past them and found his wife on the couch.

His face softened instantly.

“Sofia, thank God.

We’ve been terrified.”

Sofia recoiled.

Alexander rose from beside her.

“You were terrified?” he asked.

Javier’s eyes moved to him.

For the first time, his confidence slipped.

“I’m sorry.

Who are you?”

“Her father.”

The word changed the room.

Javier knew Alexander’s name.

I saw recognition move across his face before he buried it beneath concern.

Detective Ortiz stepped inside.

“Mr.

Robles reported that his wife assaulted his mother, stole several pieces of jewelry, and fled their hotel suite.”

“That is a lie,” Sofia whispered.

Javier spread his hands.

“She was overwhelmed.

There was champagne, a stressful day, family tension.

My mother tried to calm her down, but Sofia became violent.”

Alexander said nothing.

He simply turned his laptop toward the detectives and pressed play.

Carmen’s voice filled the apartment.

“You will sign before sunrise, or your mother will be planning a funeral instead of a honeymoon.”

The detectives listened as Sofia refused, as women laughed, and as the first strike landed.

Then Javier’s recorded voice came through the speakers.

“Don’t hit her too much in the face.

We have brunch tomorrow.”

Javier went white.

“That recording is manipulated.”

Detective Harris looked at him.

“You just told us you weren’t in the suite.”

“I wasn’t.

I was in the hallway.

I heard an argument, but I didn’t understand what was happening.”

Sofia lifted her swollen face.

“I screamed your name.”

Javier’s mouth opened, but no answer came.

Alexander closed the laptop.

“My daughter needs medical attention.

Before anyone questions her further, every injury will be documented, the original recording will be preserved, and the hotel will receive a formal evidence-retention notice.”

Detective Ortiz nodded.

“That’s appropriate.”

Javier stepped forward.

“Sofia, come home with me.

We can handle this privately.”
