In it, she stood between Alexander and me outside the venue.

We were stiff and careful, two former spouses pretending our history did not exist.

Sofia was smiling beneath her veil, unaware of what the night would bring.

She studied the picture for a long time.

“I thought that dress was ruined,” she said.

I looked at the repaired seam near the back.

She had kept it after investigators returned it.

“The dress?”

The forged deed exposed their plan.

And the bride they tried to silence became the witness who ended it.

Sofia never again wore the wedding dress.

But she kept one piece of its torn lace in the black folder beside the evidence that saved her condo and exposed the family.

On the front, beneath the name ROBLES, she added three words in her own handwriting:

They chose wrong.
