The man beside the black sedan stopped smiling the moment Dante Vale raised his phone.

“Don’t,” Dante said.

One word.

Quiet enough that Brooke almost missed it.

The man did not.

His hand froze inches from the car door.

Dante stood between him and Brooke in the narrow service alley behind the Seawind Grand Hotel, the Atlantic wind pulling at his charcoal coat.

Delivery trucks rumbled near the kitchen entrance.

Hotel employees pushed carts through a door twenty yards away, unaware that an old secret had just stepped out of a black sedan.

Brooke’s fingers had gone cold.

Dante could feel her standing behind him, breathing too quickly.

“You know this man?” he asked.

Brooke did not answer at first.

The security pin on the stranger’s lapel bore the silver V used by Vale Maritime’s executive protection division.

Dante knew every senior officer in that division.

He did not know this one.

That was impossible.

Or it should have been.

The man recovered first.

“Mr.

Vale,” he said.

“There’s been a misunderstanding.”

Dante’s gaze remained fixed on him.

“Your name.”

“Gavin Rourke.”

Dante remembered it then.

Not a face, but a name buried in old personnel files.

Rourke had worked security for Dante’s uncle Vincent during the chaotic months after Dante’s father died.

Nine years ago.

The same months when Brooke had vanished.

Dante turned slightly.

“Brooke.”

She stared at Rourke.

“He came to my apartment.”

Rourke’s jaw tightened.

Dante said nothing.

Brooke swallowed.

“Nine years ago.

I had just found out I was pregnant.

I hadn’t even figured out how to contact you yet.

Then he showed up with another man.”

Dante felt something inside him become very still.

“What did they say?”

“They knew about the baby.”

Rourke glanced toward the sedan.

Dante noticed.

“Keep talking.”

Brooke’s voice dropped.

“They gave me an envelope filled with cash.

They said it came from the Vale family.

They told me you’d been informed about the pregnancy and wanted no contact with me or the child.”

Dante’s expression did not change.

Only his eyes did.

“And you believed them?”

Pain crossed Brooke’s face.

“They had details, Dante.

Things I had only told you that night in Marblehead.

They knew about my mother.

They knew where I worked.

They knew about the art studio I wanted to open.

They knew what you had said about your father.”

Dante looked back at Rourke.

Someone had listened.

Or someone had read a report written by a person close enough to Dante to know things no outsider should have known.

“What was the message?” Dante asked.

Brooke wrapped her arms around herself.

“That your life had changed.

That you were taking control of the family business.

That a hotel worker with no money and a baby would become a liability.”

Dante’s mouth hardened.

“I never knew.”

“I know that now.”

The answer hurt more than accusation.

Rourke took one slow step backward.

Dante lifted his phone and called his chief financial officer.

The man answered immediately.

“Dante? The summit board is asking—”
