humiliation of it—not his own, but hers.

Powerful strangers had discussed her life as though she were a scheduling problem.

“She ordered you to find Brooke?”

Rourke hesitated.

“She ordered us to protect the succession.”

“From an unborn child?”

“From uncertainty.”

Dante almost laughed.

There it was again.

A polished word covering an ugly truth.

His phone rang once more.

This time it was his mother.

He stared at her name on the screen.

Brooke saw it too.

“Answer,” she said.

Dante accepted the call.

“Mother.”

Eleanor Vale’s voice was crisp despite the early hour.

“Why have you frozen Vincent’s old security accounts?”

Dante looked at Brooke.

“I’m standing with Brooke Ellis.”

Silence.

It lasted less than two seconds.

But Dante had spent his life reading hesitation.

His mother knew.

“I see,” Eleanor said.

“Do you?”

“Come home.

We will discuss this privately.”

“No.”

Another silence.

Dante had almost never told his mother no.

Not directly.

“Dante, whatever that woman has told you—”

“Her name is Brooke.”

Brooke looked away.

Eleanor exhaled.

“You are emotional.”

“For nine years, someone used my credentials to send her money and make her disappear.”

“There were circumstances you did not understand.”

“I understand there is an eight-year-old boy inside this hotel who may be my son.”

Rourke lowered his eyes.

Dante caught the movement.

“You knew,” he said.

Rourke said nothing.

Dante spoke into the phone.

“Did you know Brooke was pregnant?”

His mother’s answer came softly.

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than Dante expected.

Brooke pressed a hand against the brick wall beside her.

For nine years, she had carried the belief that Dante had rejected his own child.

For nine years, Dante had believed Brooke simply vanished.

And all that time, his mother had known exactly where the truth was buried.

“Why?” Dante asked.

Eleanor’s voice became colder.

“Because your father had been dead for forty-eight hours.

Vincent was preparing to challenge you.

Federal investigators were circling the company.

Men were choosing sides.

Then we learned that a woman no one knew might be carrying the next Vale heir.”

“Heir,” Dante repeated.

“Do not be naïve.

A child connected to you would have been leverage.”

“So you threatened his mother.”

“I removed her from danger.”

Brooke finally spoke.

“You told me Dante wanted me gone.”

Eleanor went silent.

“You let me believe my son’s father had paid to erase us.”

“I did what was necessary.”

Brooke’s face changed.

Dante had seen fear in it.

Anger.

Old grief.

Now there was something else.

Contempt.

“No,” Brooke said.

“You did what was convenient.”

She walked away from the phone.

Dante watched her enter the hotel without looking back.

Then he ended the call with his mother.

Rourke stared at him.

“What happens now?”

Dante looked toward the door Brooke had disappeared through.

“Now I find out exactly what my empire did in my name.”

By noon, the maritime summit had collapsed into confusion.

Dante canceled every meeting.

He ordered an independent forensic audit of Vale Maritime’s historical executive accounts and retained an outside law firm that had never represented the Vale family.

His board protested.

His uncle Vincent called six times.

Dante ignored him.

Then the audit team found three more payments.

One had gone to Rourke.

Another to the private investigator Dante originally
