The nurse placed the sealed envelope in my hands while Robert stared at his father as though the man’s face had changed in front of him.

No one spoke.

The only sounds in the maternity waiting room were Fiona’s cries behind the delivery-room doors and coffee dripping from Rebecca’s overturned cup onto the polished floor.

Charles Turner stood against the wall with both hands hanging at his sides.

His glasses had slipped down his nose.

The confident family patriarch who had spent years correcting everyone’s posture and lecturing them about loyalty suddenly looked very old.

Robert’s voice came out thin.

“Dad?”

Charles swallowed.

“It happened once.”

Rebecca crossed the room before anyone could stop her and struck him across the face.

His glasses flew off and hit the wall.

“You let me celebrate that baby,” she said.

“You stood beside me while I bought a cradle.”

Charles bent to retrieve his glasses, but his fingers could not close around them.

From the delivery room, Fiona shouted, “He’s lying! It wasn’t once!”

Robert turned toward the doors.

Then he turned back to his father.

His expression shifted from disbelief to rage.

The doctor stepped between them.

“This is a hospital,” he said firmly.

“The patient and child are still at risk.

Anyone who cannot remain calm will be removed.”

Robert barely seemed to hear him.

His eyes had moved to the envelope in my hands.

“You knew,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I learned the name when you did.”

“You came here because she called you.

You must have known something.”

“The hospital called me because Fiona listed me as her emergency contact.”

His face twisted as if my existence were one betrayal too many.

“Why would she choose you?”

“That is what I’m about to find out.”

I broke the seal.

Inside were five folded pages, a copy of a bank transfer, and a small brass key taped to a card.

Fiona’s handwriting covered the first sheet.

Megan,

If you are reading this, the truth is already coming out.

I know you have every reason to hate me, but you are the only person in this family who ever protected a child instead of using one.

Please protect mine until I can speak for myself.

I stopped reading.

Ethan stood beside me, quiet and watchful.

I folded the first page inward so he could not see the rest.

Robert stepped closer.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“It concerns my family.”

“It was addressed to me.”

He reached for the envelope.

A hospital security officer moved between us.

“Step back, sir.”

Robert lifted both hands, but the humiliation of being restrained in front of his relatives flushed his face dark red.

I continued reading.

Fiona wrote that Charles had approached her almost a year earlier, after learning she was pregnant.

At first, he had promised to leave Rebecca and acknowledge the baby.

Then he changed his mind.

A public scandal, he explained, would damage the Turner family’s property company and threaten several pending contracts.

Instead, he proposed a solution.

Fiona would begin a relationship with Robert.

Charles knew his son’s marriage was already failing.

He knew Robert resented Ethan and craved a biological heir he could display as proof of his manhood.

If Fiona convinced Robert that the baby was his,
