STORY PART 2 — The Hospital Report Named Her Ex’s Father

4.9Editorial score

Charles would transfer money to her, pay for an apartment, and make sure the child inherited through Robert’s branch of the family.

The plan was not merely immoral.

It was organized.

Attached to the letter was a transfer record showing forty thousand dollars moved from Turner Holdings into an account in Fiona’s name.

The payment description read consulting services.

Robert grabbed the page before security could stop him.

He scanned the transfer, then looked at Charles.

“You paid her?”

Charles found his glasses and pushed them onto his face.

“I was trying to contain a mistake.”

“A mistake?” Rebecca said.

“You mean the child?”

“I mean the situation.”

The doctor’s expression hardened.

Behind the doors, Fiona cried out again.

A nurse hurried past us carrying a tray.

Robert tore his eyes away from the delivery room and looked down at the second page.

His anger faltered.

“What is this account number?”

I already knew.

The last four digits matched an account I had seen only once, six years earlier, on the day Ethan was born.

Robert’s grandmother, Evelyn Turner, had visited me in the hospital while Robert was downstairs arguing with a billing clerk.

She had held Ethan for less than a minute, studied his face, and said, “This family punishes gentle people because they mistake kindness for weakness.”

Two weeks later, she died.

Her lawyer told us she had created a trust for Ethan, funded with shares in Turner Holdings.

Robert insisted the trust had been dissolved because Evelyn had signed the documents incorrectly.

Charles supported his story.

I had asked for records, but every request disappeared into family lawyers and closed office doors.

After years of being told I was confused, I stopped asking.

The number on Fiona’s transfer record belonged to Ethan’s trust.

I took the page back from Robert.

“You said this account never existed.”

Robert stared at the numbers.

“I believed my father.”

Charles straightened.

“This is not the place to discuss business.”

I turned to him.

“You stole from a child.”

“I managed family assets.”

“You moved forty thousand dollars from Ethan’s trust to pay your pregnant mistress.”

Rebecca made a strangled sound.

Fiona had never been only Robert’s mistress.

She had been Charles’s secret first, then a piece on a board he thought he controlled.

Charles pointed at the envelope.

“Those papers are stolen company records.

Hand them over.”

“No.”

“You have no legal authority here.”

A woman’s voice answered from the doorway.

“She may not need it.”

A woman in a navy suit entered the waiting room.

She showed her badge to the security officer, then to the doctor.

“Investigator Lena Ortiz, financial crimes division.

I was asked to come if Mrs.

Turner received a document connected to account ending in 4417.”

Charles went pale.

Robert looked at me again.

“You called the police?”

“I didn’t know there was anything to call them about.”

Ortiz opened a slim briefcase.

“Fiona Rivers contacted our office three days ago.

She provided partial records indicating possible embezzlement, fraud, and misuse of trust assets.

She said the complete documents were stored in a safe-deposit box and that the key would be released to Megan Turner if Fiona entered the hospital.”

I looked at the brass key taped inside the envelope.

Charles moved toward me.
