The image on the security monitor froze for half a second before the video began to play.

Patricia stood outside Diego’s bedroom wearing a cream silk robe.

In one hand, she carried a narrow leather belt.

In the other, she held the key she used to lock the children’s doors from the outside.

No one in the hallway moved.

Mateo Arriaga watched his wife enter his five-year-old son’s room and close the door behind her.

The controlled expression that had made executives fear him vanished.

What remained was not rage yet.

It was disbelief—the kind that arrives when the mind is still trying to protect itself from the truth.

Patricia took one step toward the security console.

Two guards blocked her.

“This is absurd,” she said.

“Anyone can manipulate a recording.”

Sophia remained behind me, gripping my uniform with both hands.

Diego pressed his face against my hip.

The recording had no sound at first.

Patricia crossed the room, pulled the curtains shut, and pointed toward the corner beyond the camera’s view.

Diego’s recorded voice finally came through the speakers.

“Please don’t make me tell Daddy I fell again.”

Mateo’s hand tightened around the silver key I had given him.

Patricia began speaking rapidly.

“That tablet belonged to Elena.

It has been sitting in a drawer for years.

Mariana could have put anything on it.

She has been obsessed with the children since she arrived.”

I looked at the monitor, not at her.

In the video, Diego backed into view.

His little hands were raised to protect his face.

Mateo reached for the console.

Sophia caught his sleeve.

“Don’t turn it off this time,” she whispered.

He looked down at her.

“This time?”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to show you before.

Patricia said the videos were bad for you.

She said you would send us away if we made you sad.”

Mateo lowered his hand.

The belt struck the side of Diego’s bed, close enough to make the child scream.

Patricia had not hit him in the clip, but she had terrified him deliberately.

She ordered him to say he had fallen from the play structure.

She told him that if he mentioned the locked door, Sophia would be punished instead.

The recording ended.

Another file began automatically.

This one showed Patricia gripping Sophia by the chin while forcing her to repeat a sentence.

“Daddy travels because he doesn’t want us.”

Sophia resisted at first.

Patricia squeezed harder.

The child repeated it.

Mateo turned away from the screen as though the words had physically struck him.

He had built a career by recognizing threats before anyone else saw them.

Yet inside his own home, his children had been living beside one while he crossed oceans, signed contracts, and believed the reports placed in front of him.

Patricia saw the guilt on his face and attacked it immediately.

“You were never here,” she said.

“I had to manage everything.
