STORY PART 2 — The Maid Took the Slap—Then the Hidden Videos Began

4.9Editorial score

The tantrums, the nightmares, the tutors, the doctors.

You left me with two damaged children and expected perfection.”

Mateo faced her slowly.

“They were grieving their mother.”

“And I was expected to replace her.”

“No,” he said.

“You were expected not to terrorize them.”

Patricia pointed at me.

“This woman has poisoned them against me.

Check her history.

She grew up in foster care.

She has no family, no references beyond that agency, and no reason to be loyal to you.

She wants a settlement.”

The old instinct to become invisible rose inside me.

I knew what it felt like to stand in a beautiful room while someone richer rewrote your life aloud.

I had watched foster parents call me difficult after locking food away.

I had watched employers describe unpaid wages as a misunderstanding.

But Sophia’s hand was still holding mine.

I stepped toward the table.

“The drawer contained more than videos,” I said.

I placed three medical reports beneath the chandelier.

The first documented a wrist injury Sophia had supposedly suffered during gymnastics.

The second described bruising on Diego’s back that Patricia had blamed on a playground fall.

The third recorded symptoms of severe anxiety, selective mutism, and repeated fear responses around an unnamed female caregiver.

Mateo picked up the final report.

A handwritten note had been attached to the last page.

Mr.

Arriaga, I have attempted to reach you privately.

I do not believe these injuries are accidental.

Please contact me without informing the children’s current guardian.

The note was signed by Dr.

Evelyn Hart.

Mateo read it twice.

“I never received this.”

“Because she was fired,” Sophia said.

Patricia’s head snapped toward her.

The girl flinched but did not retreat.

“Dr.

Hart came to the house,” Sophia continued.

“She said she needed to speak to Daddy.

Patricia made her leave.

Then Patricia told us the doctor died.”

For the first time, Patricia looked genuinely frightened.

Mateo called his attorney and ordered him to come immediately.

Then he told security to locate Dr.

Hart.

The head of security hesitated.

“Sir, a Dr.

Evelyn Hart arrived at the front gate twenty minutes ago.

She says she received a message from Ms.

Torres.”

Every face turned toward me.

The previous afternoon, after finding the reports, I had used the number printed beneath Dr.

Hart’s signature.

I had not known whether she would answer.
