Grant Vale stared at the conference-room screen as his own voice filled the silence.

“Keep saying she hit you first, Carter.

I’ll make sure Hayes expels her before lunch.”

For several seconds, no one moved.

The video had captured more than Carter tearing the wig from Millie’s head.

It had recorded Grant entering the empty classroom afterward, bending close to his son, and calmly teaching him how to lie.

Grant recovered first.

He reached for the cable connecting Letty’s phone to the projector.

Principal Hayes stepped in front of him.

“Do not touch that device.”

“This is absurd,” Grant snapped.

“A child’s recording does not show context.”

“It shows your son taking a medical wig from a student with cancer,” I said.

“It shows him shoving my daughter into a desk.

And it shows you coaching him to make a false accusation.”

Grant turned toward me with the expression of a man accustomed to ending arguments by raising his voice.

“You need to be very careful.”

I looked at Letty.

She was still holding the wet wig against her sweatshirt.

The water had darkened the blond strands, and one side of the cap had partially separated.

Letty had remembered every word.

Grant pointed toward the door.

“I am chairman of this school’s board.

I am also responsible for a significant portion of its funding.

If Dr.

Hayes intends to turn a playground disagreement into a public spectacle, she should consider the consequences.”

Principal Hayes did not move.

“This was not a playground disagreement.”

She returned to the table and paused the video on the frame showing Carter’s hand wrapped around the wig.

Millie’s face was visible behind him.

She looked terrified.

Grant glanced at the image, then away.

“Children tease each other.

That does not justify assaulting my son.”

“Letty never touched him,” Millie said.

Her voice was so soft that everyone leaned closer.

Grant looked at her as though he had only just noticed she was in the room.

Millie swallowed.

“She asked him three times to give it back.

He pushed her.”

Carter rolled his eyes.

“She was coming at me.”

“No,” another voice said.

Mrs.

Bell had been standing near the wall since I arrived.

Until then, she had kept her eyes on the floor.

Now she lifted her head.

“She did not come at you.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“Mrs.
