Bell, I suggest you think carefully before making statements about an incident you failed to control.”
The teacher flinched, but she continued.
“I saw Carter take the wig.
I saw him turn on the water.
I saw him shove Letty.”
“Then why didn’t you stop him?” Millie’s mother asked.
Mrs.
Bell’s mouth trembled.
“Because I was afraid.”
She looked at Grant.
“This was not my first report about Carter.
I submitted three behavior referrals last semester.
One involved him locking another student in a supply room.
Another involved threats against a boy who reported cheating.”
Principal Hayes turned sharply.
“I never received those referrals.”
“I know.” Mrs.
Bell pressed her fingers together.
“Mr.
Vale called me after each one.
He said I was damaging a child’s future over ordinary mistakes.
Then the reports disappeared from the system.”
Grant gave a cold laugh.
“You are blaming me for your own poor classroom management.”
Carter looked at his father.
“You said nobody could prove anything.”
The words left his mouth before he seemed to understand what he had admitted.
Grant’s face hardened.
“Be quiet.”
Principal Hayes picked up her phone and called the district office.
She requested the superintendent, the district’s legal counsel, and the director responsible for student safety.
Grant began pacing.
“This school has accepted my family’s support for nine years.
The science wing carries my mother’s name.
The technology lab exists because I paid for it.
Do not pretend my judgment suddenly means nothing.”
“It means no more than the safety of these children,” Principal Hayes replied.
He stopped pacing.
“Then perhaps this school no longer needs my support.”
I expected the threat to frighten her.
Instead, she turned the projector back on and copied Letty’s recording to the district’s secure evidence folder while we watched.
The superintendent joined by speakerphone a minute later.
Principal Hayes summarized what had happened and explained that the original recording remained on Letty’s phone.
The superintendent’s response was immediate.
“Preserve the original file.
Restrict Mr.
Vale’s access to school records, and do not allow any documents to leave the building.”
Grant leaned over the phone.
“You are overreacting to a dispute between children.”
“I am responding to evidence that a board officer attempted to influence a disciplinary investigation,” the superintendent said.
“You are suspended from all board activity pending review.”
“You cannot suspend me.”
“The board’s vice chair can, under the emergency ethics provision you voted to adopt last year.”
For the first time, Grant had no immediate answer.
Carter shifted away from him.
