Sergio said nothing.
The female paramedic entered and knelt several feet from Ruby.
She did not touch her.
She asked permission before moving closer, before opening her medical bag, and before offering a blanket.
Ruby watched her carefully.
“Will I get in trouble if I’m hungry?” she asked.
The paramedic’s expression tightened.
“No, sweetheart.
You will never be in trouble with me for being hungry.”
Ruby crawled out slowly.
As the paramedic examined her, Robert handed Sergeant Collins the punishment schedule.
Collins read each line twice.
Monday: No dinner.
Tuesday: Water only.
Wednesday: Bread if she obeys.
Thursday: No speaking.
Friday: Lockdown.
The sergeant photographed the page, then placed it in an evidence envelope.
“Where did you find this?”
“Inside her backpack.”
“Who packed the backpack?”
Robert looked toward Ruby.
She answered before he could.
“Sergio did.
He said Uncle Robert needed the rules.”
Outside, Sergio began shouting that the paper was part of a behavioral program suggested by Paula.
He claimed Ruby had severe tantrums, stole food, and lied for attention.
Ruby’s eyes dropped.
Robert recognized the effect of those accusations.
She had heard them often enough to believe them.
“Look at me,” he said gently.
She did.
“Being hungry is not stealing.
Telling the truth is not lying.”
The paramedic found signs of dehydration and significant weight loss.
She could not determine the full extent of Ruby’s condition inside the house, but she recommended immediate evaluation at a children’s hospital.
Sergio demanded to ride with her.
Sergeant Collins refused.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Maya, you are overreacting.
There’s no proof my brother caused any of this.”
Robert held up his phone.
“There is video.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The recording continued beyond the scene with Elaine.
It showed Sergio positioning the chair beneath the doorknob after Ruby had been placed inside.
It showed Paula begging him to stop.
It showed Elaine insisting that consistency was necessary because Ruby had become spoiled.
Then the recording captured Daniel himself entering the bedroom several hours later.
He removed the chair, woke Ruby, and asked whether anyone had hurt her.
When the terrified child said no, Daniel turned toward the hidden camera and said, “See? No victim, no crime.”
Sergeant Collins watched the clip without blinking.
Daniel reached for Robert’s phone.
Two officers restrained him before he touched it.
“Officer Vega,” Collins said, “you are relieved of duty pending investigation.
