One day, Ruby handed her a purple crayon.
It was not forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
A year after the night Sergio came to the door, Robert made beef stew again.
Rain tapped against the same kitchen window.
The refrigerator still hummed too loudly, and the cracked driveway still needed repairs.
Ruby climbed onto her chair without asking.
Robert placed a bowl in front of her.
She picked up her spoon, tasted the stew, and frowned thoughtfully.
“It needs more salt,” she announced.
Robert laughed.
Ruby laughed too.
She did not cover her mouth.
Then she reached for another piece of bread from the basket in the middle of the table.
No one watched the clock.
No one checked a schedule.
No one made her earn it.
