STORY PART 3 — My Ex Married My Sister—Then My Death Certificate Appeared

4.9Editorial score

Ethan straightened his jacket, trying to recover the confidence Lorenzo’s arrival had stripped from him.

“At first, no.

I genuinely cared about you.

But you were impossible to manage.

You questioned everything.

Chloe understood that families sometimes make practical decisions.”

Chloe slapped him.

The sound snapped across the restaurant.

Ethan touched his cheek and looked at her with open contempt.

“Don’t pretend you were innocent.

You wanted her life before you knew it came with money.”

Chloe’s face crumpled.

For once, my mother did not rush to comfort her.

I picked up the hospital photograph.

Vivian was younger, holding a newborn wrapped in a pale blanket.

Beside her stood a broad-shouldered man with exhausted eyes.

On the back, someone had written, Scarlet Elena Vale, protected by promise.

“Did you love me?” I asked my mother.

She looked directly at me.

“More than my own life.”

“Then why help them steal from me?”

Her answer came slowly.

“Because Rusk contacted me.

He said he knew you were alive.

He said that if I did not release the trust, he would expose you and kill Chloe.”

Chloe sank back into her chair.

“You never told me.”

“I thought I could satisfy him without endangering either of you.

Ethan said the assets could be redirected through a marriage settlement.

He said once Chloe married him, the money would move beyond Rusk’s reach.”

Tobias gave a humorless laugh.

“Ethan planned to transfer the waterfront properties to a shell company controlled by Rusk.”

He placed corporate records on the table.

Ethan’s signature appeared on every page.

My mother stared at them.

“You told me you were protecting the family.”

“I was protecting my future,” Ethan snapped.

“Something Scarlet never understood how to do.”

Lorenzo moved before I saw him move.

He did not strike Ethan.

He simply placed one hand on the back of Ethan’s chair and leaned down until they were eye level.

“Speak to her like that again,” he said, “and your future will become very small.”

Ethan swallowed.

I should have felt satisfaction.

Instead, I felt hollow.

The engagement dinner had become a courtroom, and every person I trusted had arrived carrying evidence against themselves.

“Why did you agree to come here?” I asked Lorenzo.

“You knew all of this before I entered your office.”

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“I knew who you were.

I did not know Ethan had reached Vivian until you asked me to attend the dinner.

Tobias investigated the guest list.

We found the fraudulent probate filing this afternoon.”

“You have watched me for years?”

“Protected you,” he corrected.
