STORY PART 4 — My Ex Married My Sister—Then My Death Certificate Appeared

4.9Editorial score

“Without telling me.”

“That was the promise made to your mother.

You were supposed to have an ordinary life until the danger passed.”

I glanced at the locked doors, the guards, the forged certificate, and the man I had once planned to marry.

“It did not pass.”

“No,” he said.

“It learned your name.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Ethan’s expression brightened.

“Good.

This circus is over.”

But the officers who entered were accompanied by a woman in a navy suit carrying a federal badge.

Behind her came an older attorney I recognized from Moretti corporate meetings.

The federal agent introduced herself as Mara Chen.

“Mr.

Prescott,” she said, “stand and place your hands where I can see them.”

Ethan laughed uncertainly.

“You cannot be serious.

I haven’t done anything.”

Agent Chen placed printed messages beside his plate.

They showed months of communication between Ethan and Dominic Rusk, including instructions to forge my death certificate, pressure Vivian, and marry Chloe before the trust’s annual review.

One message was dated three weeks before I discovered the affair.

Keep Scarlet unstable.

If she cancels the wedding herself, no one looks at us.

I read it twice.

Every cruel conversation returned at once: Ethan telling me I was paranoid, Chloe accusing me of neglecting him, my mother urging me to apologize whenever I questioned their closeness.

They had not merely betrayed me.

They had built a version of reality in which my instincts were treated as defects.

Agent Chen handcuffed Ethan while he shouted that the messages had been taken out of context.

“Call my attorney!”

“Your attorney is already cooperating,” she said.

Chloe watched him being led away.

Her ring caught the chandelier light as her hand trembled.

At the doorway, Ethan twisted toward me.

“You think Moretti saved you? Ask him what his family gained when your parents died.”

Lorenzo did not react, but I saw Tobias’s eyes narrow.

Agent Chen took Ethan outside.

I turned to Lorenzo.

“What did he mean?”

The older attorney answered before Lorenzo could.

“Your father’s trust included voting shares in the Moretti Grand.

Until you claimed them, Lorenzo’s family exercised temporary control.

Ethan intended to use that fact to convince you the Morettis had stolen from you.”

“Did they benefit?”

Lorenzo met my eyes.

“Yes.

The hotel expanded while your shares were under protection.

Their value increased.

We received management authority, but not ownership.

Every dividend owed to you remains in the trust.”

It was not the comforting answer.

It was the honest one.

“You could have hidden that.”

“You have lived among enough people who hide things.”

The attorney handed me another document.
