Nathan rounded on her.

“And you enjoyed this? Sitting beside me all these years while holding a knife behind your back?”

“I held a safeguard.”

“You held my leash.”

“I held nothing until you tried to empty the accounts.”

He struck the table with his palm.

Glasses jumped.

Vanessa flinched.

“There was no theft.

The money would have remained under my control.”

“That is the definition of the problem,” Emilio Alvarez said.

Nathan looked around the table, searching for one friendly face.

He found none.

Then he saw Patrick Donnelly.

“Patrick,” he said.

“My father helped your family when the federal contracts disappeared.

You owe the Whitakers.”

Patrick’s expression hardened.

“Clara arranged the bridge financing.

Clara shook her head.

“I reminded them who you are when no one is applauding.”

Samuel closed the letter.

“Under Article Seven, the trustee has requested an immediate suspension vote.

Before we proceed, Nathan may answer the evidence.”

Nathan straightened his jacket.

Some of the old arrogance returned, brittle but recognizable.

“Fine.

Let’s discuss evidence.

That recording was made illegally.”

Clara slid a small card across the table.

“A copy of the security notice posted inside the study where you held the conversation.

Audio and video monitoring are disclosed at both entrances.”

“I didn’t see it.”

“You not reading a notice does not erase it.”

“The transfer instructions were drafts.”

Daniel produced confirmation receipts from the bank.

“They were authenticated using your private token and Vanessa’s new account number.”

Nathan turned toward Vanessa.

She raised both hands.

“You told me it was a gift account.
