STORY PART 4 — His Mistress Claimed Him—Then My Lawyer Opened the Black Folder

“There is,” Miriam said.

“Mr.

Mercer believed Mrs.

Mercer would protect his reputation even after he stopped protecting hers.”

Adrian’s eyes locked on mine.

“What do you want?”

It was the question of a man who believed every injury had a price.

“I wanted the truth before it damaged anyone else.”

“You want revenge.”

“If I wanted revenge, I would have exposed the affair three months ago.

I waited because I needed to know whether the betrayal ended in our bedroom or reached the company.”

Celeste’s face changed at the word betrayal.

Her anger was no longer aimed only at me.

“You said she refused to give you a divorce,” she told him.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

I answered for him.

“He never asked for one.”

She stared at me.

“He told me your lawyers were delaying everything.”

“My lawyer met him for the first time tonight.”

Celeste turned slowly toward Adrian.

“You said the penthouse would be yours after the settlement.”

“The Hartwell penthouse belongs to my family trust,” I said.

“Adrian has never owned it.”

Her hand rose unconsciously to the earrings.

“And those?” she asked.

“The real earrings are in a bank vault.”

A few guests gasped.

Celeste removed one and examined the back as if the metal might confess.

Adrian had paid $42,000 for the pair using a Mercer account.

The invoice described them as custom reproductions for promotional use.

He had told Celeste they were my grandmother’s diamonds.

“They are copies,” I said.

“Commissioned for a hotel exhibition five years ago.”

Color flooded her cheeks.

He had not merely lied to her.

He had staged her triumph with replicas.

Celeste closed her fist around the earring.

“You told me they were an heirloom.”

Adrian looked at the doors.

The security director noticed.

“Mr.

Mercer,” he said, “you are free to leave the gala, but your executive access has been suspended.

Your company phone, laptop, and key card must remain with the audit committee.”

Adrian pulled the phone from his pocket.

“This is my property.”

Thomas produced the asset register.

“It belongs to Mercer Group.”

For the first time that evening, Adrian looked small.

Not powerless.

Not yet.

But reduced to his actual dimensions without the company, the hotel, my family’s money, or my silence standing behind him.

He placed the phone on the table.

Then Celeste’s purse began to ring.

The sound was bright and absurd in the quiet ballroom.
