STORY PART 5 — His Mistress Claimed Him—Then My Lawyer Opened the Black Folder

She reached inside, but the security director held out his hand.

“Before you remove anything, Ms.

Vale, we need the executive key card shown in the recording.”

“I do not have it.”

The ringing continued.

“Open the purse,” Adrian said.

Celeste looked at him in disbelief.

“You gave it to me.”

“I gave you nothing.”

There it was—the final instinct of a coward.

When the structure collapsed, he tried to place its weight on the nearest woman.

Celeste’s expression went cold.

She set the purse on the table and emptied it beneath the chandelier.

A lipstick rolled across the linen.

Then keys, a wallet, two phones, a folded hotel receipt, and the black executive access card.

The audit chairman picked it up by the edges.

Adrian pointed at her.

“She stole that.”

Celeste laughed once, without humor.

“You put it in my hand outside your office.”

“You are lying.”

“You changed the security schedule.

You told me which files to photograph.

You said the competitor would pay through my company so your name stayed clean.”

The room erupted.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

Security separated them before she could pull away.

“Do not say another word,” he hissed.

Celeste looked at the cameras, the board members, and the two police officers who had just entered through the service doors.

Miriam had arranged for them to wait nearby in case the access card or confidential files appeared.

Then Celeste looked at me.

“He said you would take the blame,” she whispered.

“For what?”

“The acquisition leak.

He said your family trust had been buying the properties through another company.

He said if anyone found the payments, he would prove you arranged them to force him out.”

Miriam’s posture sharpened.

“Do you have that in writing?”

Celeste glanced at the second phone on the table.

Adrian moved toward it.

The security director blocked him.

Celeste unlocked the phone and opened a hidden message application.

There were months of conversations, voice notes, payment instructions, photographs of confidential documents, and promises Adrian had made about our marriage, the company, and the future he claimed they would share.

One message had been sent the morning of the gala.

Tonight she becomes emotional in public.

Once she causes a scene, the board will see she is unstable.

Stay calm and let her destroy herself.

Miriam read it aloud.

No one moved.

That message hurt more than seeing them together.

The affair had been a betrayal of our vows.

This was something colder.

Adrian had planned to use my pain as evidence against my judgment.

He had invited Celeste to provoke me, arranged for cameras to capture my reaction, and expected the familiar stereotype of the hysterical wife to finish what his accounting tricks had begun.

My restraint had not merely protected my dignity.
