He had prepared a false court document to take Lily.

Noah looked at Vivian.

“What happens now?”

“That depends on the police and prosecutors.

At minimum, they will investigate attempted use of a fraudulent judicial document.”

I sat down because my legs could no longer hold me.

Lily reached for my face.

I pressed my lips to her fingers and tried to breathe.

“He would have taken her,” I whispered.

Noah crouched several feet away, leaving space between us.

“He did not.”

“Only because I happened to sit beside you.”

“No,” he said.

“I noticed the danger because you had already created a record.

You filed the request.

You saved the footage.

You gave your friend permission to release it.

My team opened the door, but you put the evidence behind it.”

I looked at him then.

On the plane, I had mistaken his exhaustion for sadness.

Now I saw something else in it: recognition.

“Why were those people filming you?” I asked.

He leaned back against the wall.

“My uncle has been trying to remove me from our company.

He told the board I disappeared because I was unstable after my father died.

Reporters have been tracking me, hoping to prove I am unfit to lead.”

The shape of his fear became clear.

“That is why you wanted us to look like a family.”

“A tired father traveling with his wife and baby was less interesting than a missing chief executive having a breakdown.”

Despite everything, I smiled.

“You chose a convincing baby.”

Lily responded by grabbing his finger.

For the first time since the plane landed, Noah smiled too.

We returned to the gate area twenty minutes later.

Ryan sat beneath the watch of an officer.

His two companions had been separated for questioning.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Emily, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

I stopped several yards away.

“Which part? The empty account? The false custody paper? Or the men carrying my photograph?”

His eyes flashed.

“I was trying to protect Lily.

You ran away with no plan.”

“I left because you locked me out.”

“You were emotional.”

“I was homeless.”

“You always exaggerate.”

The officer beside him turned on his body camera and said, “Mr.

Mercer, I advise you to stop speaking.”

Ryan ignored him.

“She cannot provide for a child,” he said, pointing at me.

“She has no job, no residence, and no money.”

There it was—the argument he had built everything around.

He had taken my access to our money, barred me from our home, then planned to use the poverty he created as evidence against me.

Vivian stepped forward.
