STORY PART 4 — She Made My Injured Father Crawl—Then the Court Officer Entered

4.9Editorial score

Hale told me to double Richard’s sedative and stop documenting his bruises.

When I refused, Marcus threatened my nursing license.”

Marcus laughed too loudly.

“She’s lying.”

The officer connected the phone to a portable speaker.

The first recording began with the scrape of a chair and Vivian’s voice.

“He doesn’t need to be alert.

He needs to sign.”

Then Marcus answered.

“What if he reads it?”

“He can barely read the clock.”

A pen clicked.

My father’s voice followed, slurred and confused.

“Where is Isabella?”

Vivian replied with chilling patience.

“She abandoned you.

Sign the page, Richard.”

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Marcus’s attorney arrived at that moment, breathless and carrying a briefcase.

He listened to the final seconds, looked at his client, and slowly closed his mouth.

Vivian pointed at Evelyn.

“She manipulated him.

She has always hated me.”

Evelyn’s expression did not change.

“There are twelve more recordings.”

Marcus lunged for the phone.

The police officer caught his arm and pushed him back against the wall.

“Do that again and you’ll be in handcuffs.”

The officer played the next file.

Marcus’s voice filled the room.

“Once the final transfer clears, we move him somewhere private.

No visitors.

No daughter.

No old employees.”

Vivian answered, “And the nurse?”

“Paid off.”

Another pause.

Then Marcus laughed.

“He should have died in the crash.

Would’ve saved us all this trouble.”

My body went cold.

The court officer looked at me, but I could not speak.

Evelyn pressed her lips together.

“There’s more,” she said.

The recording continued.

Vivian’s voice sharpened.

“Keep your voice down.”

Marcus replied, “Why? The mechanic kept his mouth shut.

You said the brake line would make it look accidental.”

The room changed.

Until that moment, we had been dealing with coercion, financial exploitation, forgery, and abuse.

Now every officer stood differently.

One reached for his radio.

Another moved between Marcus and the exit.
