STORY PART 7 — She Made My Injured Father Crawl—Then the Court Officer Entered

4.9Editorial score

One evening, months after the trial, Dad and I stood in his restored office.

The silver watch lay on the desk between us, cleaned and repaired.

He picked it up and held it toward me.

“Your mother gave me this when I thought success meant owning buildings,” he said.

“I wore it for thirty-two years and still managed to waste time on the wrong people.”

I closed his fingers around it.

“Then wear it for the right reasons now.”

He fastened it to his wrist.

Outside the office, sunlight spread across the marble floor where I had once found him crawling.

Dad stepped into the hallway with his cane, paused, and straightened his shoulders.

This time, no one ordered him to move faster.

No one held medicine beyond his reach.

No one laughed when his hand trembled.

He crossed the floor at his own pace, wearing the watch my mother had given him, while the house remained completely silent.

Not the frightened silence Vivian had demanded.

The peaceful silence of a home that belonged to him again.
