STORY PART 5 — My Sister Claimed My Husband’s Baby—The DNA Named Another Guest

“You cannot remove me without a vote.”

My father spoke from behind him.

“We voted.”

Three board members seated near the stage rose one after another.

Eric looked around the ballroom and finally understood why several guests he had expected to support him had remained silent.

They had not been waiting to see me collapse.

They had been waiting for him to reveal how far he was willing to go.

Natalie pulled at my mother’s arm.

“Mom, please.

You know Rachel has always hated me.”

My mother gently removed Natalie’s hand.

“Your sister paid your rent when you lost your job,” she said through tears.

“She helped you finish school.

She gave you a place at every table she earned.”

“She made me feel small.”

“No,” my father said.

“You felt small beside her, and you punished her for it.”

Natalie’s face crumpled.

For years, I had protected her from consequences.

When she missed payments, I covered them.

When she fought with our parents, I translated her anger into softer words.

When she made reckless choices, I called them mistakes and helped her begin again.

That night, I finally understood that rescuing someone repeatedly can convince them they are entitled to the life you built.

Daniel walked toward Claire.

“Can we leave?” he asked quietly.

She looked at him for the first time.

“You can leave.

I am staying with Rachel.”

Daniel nodded.

He did not argue.

As he passed Eric, neither man spoke.

Their friendship was over, not because one had betrayed the other, but because both had discovered that the loyalty they demanded was something neither had practiced.

Hotel security escorted Daniel to a side exit.

Natalie sank into a chair near the cake table.

“What happens to me now?” she whispered.

It was the first honest question she had asked all evening.

“The child will need the truth,” I said.

“Daniel will face his responsibilities.

Claire will decide what happens in her marriage.

Eric will answer for the money.

And you will live with the choices you made.”

She looked up at me.

“Are you going to forgive me?”

I thought about every Sunday dinner, every birthday toast, every time she had hugged me while carrying my husband’s scent on her clothes.

“Not tonight,” I said.

Marissa served Eric with the divorce petition before he left the ballroom.

The filing cited adultery, financial misconduct, and dissipation of marital assets.

The prenuptial agreement he had once mocked as unnecessary protected my ownership stake in Bennett Meridian.

The attempted transfers gave the court additional reason to freeze several accounts while investigators reviewed them.

Eric moved out that evening.

Within two weeks, a court-ordered prenatal paternity test confirmed the first report.

Daniel was the father.

Claire filed for divorce.

She did not make a public spectacle of it.

She simply separated their finances, retained counsel, and declined every request Daniel made for another chance.
