“Madison?” Nathaniel said again.

Through the Sterling House glass, she could see him standing beside Veronica, one hand still close to the woman’s waist.

Madison stared at the lab report on her phone.

She had expected another piece of proof against him.

Instead, she had found something that changed the shape of the entire betrayal.

The report was Nathaniel’s.

It had been issued after a private medical examination months before Aspen.

The language was clinical, dry and almost offensively calm compared with what it meant.

A severe reproductive condition had been documented.

The physician had recommended additional testing and made one conclusion unmistakably clear: natural conception would be extraordinarily unlikely.

Madison read the sentence again.

Then she looked through the hotel windows at Veronica’s hand resting over her pregnancy.

Nathaniel had believed the baby was his.

Veronica had made sure he believed it.

“Madison?” His voice sharpened.

“Are you there?”

She finally spoke.

“I’m here.”

Nathaniel glanced toward the street, instinctively searching for her.

“Where are you?”

“Does it matter?”

A pause.

Veronica’s smile faded slightly as she watched him.

Nathaniel lowered his voice.

“I told you dinner moved.”

Madison looked at the message still sitting above the report.

Dinner moved.

Don’t wait up.

“You did.”

“Then what is this?”

“This is me calling my husband.”

The word husband landed harder than she intended.

Nathaniel turned away from Veronica.

Madison could almost see the calculation beginning behind his eyes.

Nathaniel had built Pierce Global by deciding what people wanted before they admitted wanting it.

He could read fear in a boardroom from twenty feet away.

But he had never learned how to read Madison when she became quiet.

“What do you want?” he asked.

Madison looked at the lab report again.

“Nothing tonight.”

She ended the call.

Nathaniel immediately called back.

She declined it.

Then again.

Declined.

On the third attempt, she turned the phone facedown on the passenger seat.

Across the street, Veronica was questioning him now.

Madison couldn’t hear the words, but she watched Veronica’s posture change.

One hand moved protectively over her stomach.

Nathaniel shook his head.

Veronica touched his arm.

He pulled it away—not violently, but fast enough to reveal irritation.

For the first time that afternoon, Veronica looked uncertain.

Madison started the car.

She did not go home.
