Because for the first time he understood he had not controlled the betrayal.

Veronica had been moving pieces of her own.

He turned the lab report around.

“Then answer this.”

Veronica stared at the page.

Her face changed before she read more than a few lines.

Madison noticed.

So did Nathaniel.

“You knew,” he said.

Veronica looked up.

“Knew what?”

“That I’d had testing.”

“No.”

“You didn’t even read it.”

“I don’t need to read your private medical history to know I’m pregnant.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Veronica’s breathing quickened.

Nathaniel stepped around the desk.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Madison took her phone from her bag.

Madison laid the dates side by side.

Nathaniel stared.

Veronica stopped speaking.

The silence answered what denial could not.

“You were already pregnant,” Nathaniel said.

Veronica shook her head.

“The dates aren’t exact.”

“You were already pregnant.”

“They estimate these things.”

“And you told me Aspen was when it happened.”

Veronica’s face hardened.

“You wanted it to be yours.”

Nathaniel recoiled as though she had struck him.

Madison said nothing.

Veronica looked between them, realizing too late that she had just said the one sentence she could never take back.

Nathaniel’s voice dropped.

“Was I ever the father?”

Veronica pressed her lips together.

“Answer me.”

“I don’t know.”

The room went still.

Not impossible.

Not certain.

Just I don’t know.

Nathaniel sat down slowly.

Veronica tried to reach for him.
